I&#8217;ve loved everyone&#8217;s comments on this blog and in person throughout the weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Both Micah and David took notes on paper last night. David wrote (the best he could) some key words that he heard.<\/p>\n<p>Micah&#8217;s asking some pretty good questions. As you&#8217;ll see in his questions below, he&#8217;s listening as if Paul was writing to him. (Of course, sometimes he&#8217;s just being funny. Still&#8230;) Can&#8217;t wait to help him understand over the next few important, formative years. <strong>Are you going to help me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>David&#8217;s key words<\/strong> (edited for spelling):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>jail<\/li>\n<li>worthy<\/li>\n<li>followers<\/li>\n<li>obey your parents<\/li>\n<li>group (<em>as in we have group at our house on Sundays<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Micah:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I know why Paul was in jail &#8211; because he believed in God<\/li>\n<li><strong>How come we have to suffer the same way?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>We will bow down to God even when we don&#8217;t want to because angels will knock our knees (<em>I think we&#8217;ll have to talk about this one!<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>How can you send Timothy to us when you are dead?<\/li>\n<li>People are like dogs!<\/li>\n<li>All things were made in seven days<\/li>\n<li>How is Paul thinking about us?<\/li>\n<li><strong>How did I die with God when I&#8217;m still alive?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How are we becoming more like God?<\/strong> (<em>Anyone else asking this one?<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t be hard on your children &#8211; did you hear that? (<em>Yes, he actually wrote that!<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Luke is a doctor. I didn&#8217;t know that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Saralynn:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It doesn&#8217;t matter why they preach as long as it&#8217;s the true gospel<\/li>\n<li>Obeying the rules doesn&#8217;t matter if you don&#8217;t have the heart-change to go with it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dan&#8217;l:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How many of us would be able (or bold enough!) to say that we care for someone <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=philippians%201:8&amp;version=46\" target=\"_blank\">in the same way Jesus does<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>A while back I noted that Jesus said that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2014:11;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">he didn&#8217;t care why people believed in him<\/a>, just that they did. Now Paul writes that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=philippians%201:15-18&amp;version=46\" target=\"_blank\">it doesn&#8217;t matter how they hear about Jesus<\/a>, just that they do. <strong>So either God is really sloppy about this whole salvation thing, or he desperately wants as many to believe as possible.<\/strong> I&#8217;m pretty sure I know which it is.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%202:12;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">Work&#8230;to discover what it really means to be saved<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; this is a great understanding of the meaning of this verse<\/li>\n<li>I wonder who he was referring to who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%202:19-21;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">didn&#8217;t care about Christ<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Many Christians are concerned about using words that have alternative crass meanings. While it&#8217;s true that we should watch what we say, two other things are true as well:<\/li>\n<ul>\n<ol>\n<li>We cannot expect unbelievers to necessarily think the same way about those words. Clean language without a clean heart is useless (as we&#8217;ll see in a minute).<\/li>\n<li>Apparently Paul thought that sometimes it&#8217;s OK to use them for shock value to make a point. Here are a couple of examples from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%203;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">Philippians 3<\/a> where he used harsh language and bad words: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%203:2;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">dogs<\/a> (harsh &#8211; an apostle calling names?); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%203:8;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">garbage<\/a> (bad word; <a href=\"http:\/\/net.bible.org\/verse.php?search=philippians%203:8&amp;book=philippians&amp;chapter=3&amp;verse=8\" target=\"_blank\">check out the footnote here<\/a>). [Bonus: did you catch the one in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Galatians%205:12;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">Galatians 5:12<\/a>?]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>I love the fact that Paul used the term &#8220;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=colossians%201:2;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Christ-follower<\/strong><\/a><strong>&#8221; instead of &#8220;Christian&#8221;.<\/strong> In fact, Paul never used &#8220;Christian&#8221; in any of his letters. (Bonus points if you can find the only three places it does show up in the NT!)<\/li>\n<li>This was not a church that Paul had started; he had not even met them yet (if he ever did)<\/li>\n<li>In the Bible a &#8220;mystery&#8221; is something that had been hidden, but now has been revealed. Of course, that doesn&#8217;t mean that we fully understand it yet &#8211; just that God&#8217;s not hiding it anymore. Case in point: <strong>Does someone want to explain the mystery &#8220;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=colossians%201:27;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>that Christ lives in you<\/strong><\/a><strong>&#8220;?<\/strong> I believe that if you can&#8217;t explain something well, you don&#8217;t really understand it well.<\/li>\n<li>Love the great <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians%202:14-15;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">theology of the cross<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians%202:23;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">Outside rules don&#8217;t change the inside<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Colossians has a lot in common with Ephesians. Remember this one? &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians%203:13;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">Put up with each other.<\/a>&#8221; (Side note: some people think that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians%204:16;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\">letter to Laodicea<\/a> is our book of Ephesians.)<\/li>\n<li>Everybody has their favorite &#8220;method&#8221; of evangelism. Some want fiery preaching. Some like to knock on strangers&#8217; doors. Others prefer to just try to live good lives. <strong>I think I like <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians%204:5-6;&amp;version=46;\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Paul&#8217;s method<\/strong><\/a><strong> the best.<\/strong> It really fits my personality, and it seems to fit just about every culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Warning: long post ahead!)
