What seems as if it could have been an illustration of prosperity was really a dire omen. The summer fruit came at <em>\u201cthe end\u201d<\/em> of the harvest, and, in the same way, Israel had come to the end of her time. <a id=\"return-note-2027-1\" class=\"simple-footnote\" title=\"There is a play on words here not visible in English. The Hebrew word for \u201csummer fruit\u201d is \u05e7\u05b8\u05d9\u05b4\u05e5, qayits, and the word for \u201cend\u201d is \u05e7\u05b5\u05e5, qets.\" href=\"#note-2027-1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> The people\u2019s hearts were so out of touch with what God really wanted that they complained all the way through the feasts and Sabbaths (which God gave them for rest) about getting back to work (Amos 8:4-6). <a id=\"return-note-2027-2\" class=\"simple-footnote\" title=\"This sad commentary could have been written about American Christianity today. Worship services and spiritual growth are often considered duties, invasions on the calendar, rather than cheerful priorities. <a href=\"><\/a><sup>2<\/sup> More specifically, they could not wait to get back to making money by cheating people, the very antithesis of those special days.<\/p><p>The judgments promised in Amos 8:7-13 seem to be mix of both immediate and future events. The Assyrian invasion would certainly bring death and destruction. The <em>\u201cfamine\u201d<\/em> for <em>\u201cdivine revelation\u201d<\/em> seems to have been fulfilled in the 400 years between Malachi and the Gospels. However, the massive earthquake and the darkening of the sun probably refer to the ultimate \u201cday of the LORD\u201d in the Tribulation.<\/p><div class=\"simple-footnotes\">\n<p class=\"notes\">Notes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"note-2027-1\">There is a play on words here not visible in English.
