Still had to do this one by myself (and a little late at that). Hebrews can be such a complex book if we don’t understand the Jewish background and the little details in the Law of Moses. Still, there is a lot we can get out of it, even without those things. Here is what I heard:
- Giving a tenth of our income is not primarily an OT Law thing; it’s primarily an act of honor to whomever we give it
- When the rules are changed, the law must be changed
- What a great line – “Jesus is not at all like us sinners“
- I don’t think there is a more awesome phrase in all of Scripture – “Jesus died once for all” – for all time and for all people.
- So often we get wrapped up in the past and present, forgetting that everything we consider important is just a “shadow” or “copy” of the real life awaiting us. (Pop quiz: how many times did he use the word “shadow” in these chapters?)
- Don’t remember seeing this before: God stopped caring about his people when they broke their agreement with him.
- The strict laws of the Old Testament are old and out-of-date because the rules have changed
- The old laws about eating, drinking, and ceremonial physical cleanliness became obsolete when Christ came
- I love the analogy of the last will
- Many people teach that Christ is already ruling on his throne, that this is his kingdom now, and it just needs to get better before he’ll come back. If that’s true, I want out! If he can’t do a better job ruling than this, I’m scared. He doesn’t even have his enemies under control yet. That’s not how the rest of Scripture says it’s going to play out.
- “It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God” – what an awful position to stand before God after intentionally rejecting him!
- Biblical Creationism is a faith thing; interestingly, so is evolutionism
- Don’t tell me that there is no such thing as a “seeker”. God rewards those who search for him.
- I must have missed this before. But I’m glad that God’s plan has included us from long ago.
- “Do you think you can possibly escape” God’s judgment?
- Hebrews is a short letter? I wonder what his other letters looked like!
